Abstract: In order to do this essay it first has to be established what specifically is culture. Yes we have listed all the elements that can comprise culture, but what exactly is it. By definition culture is: “the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group; the characteristic features of everyday existence shared by people in a place or time.”

With this universal understanding I feel that now it would be appropriate to discuss what my ideas and hopes are for this project. I think that against what many people in the class think, this has a very strong relation to our understanding of philosophy. First off, you have to see the connection between communication and culture. Cultures are created through communication. Communication is the means of human interaction through which cultural characteristics ( all the one’s that we have listed and more) are created and shared. It is not so much that individuals go out and purposely try to create a culture when they interact in societies, but rather that cultures are a natural byproduct of social interaction. In a sense, cultures are the leftovers of communication. Without communication, it would be impossible to maintain and pass along cultural characteristics from one place to another. Therefore someone could say that culture is created and learned through communication. This then brings into the idea of philosophy which simply can be defined as the pursuit of wisdom of the unknown. Knowing that communication is a tool used to express one’s feelings and state of mind, how could it be expected that philosophy would exist without communication? So if communication is the foundation of both culture and philosophy then there clearly must be a connection between the two. In this project we are attempting to find those similarities that will enable us to enhance our communication of the big questions. Overall, I hope to gain a better understanding of culture and more specifically the elements that make it up. I want to improve upon my comprehension of how those small elements alone can play such a large role in our ability to communicate ideas, which ultimately means communicating philosophical ideas.
I have high hopes for this project.... and I hope nobody lets me down.
